Rustenburg Girls’ Junior School, in partnership with Schoolscape and the Western Cape Education Department, is making a difference in schools throughout the country by encouraging the importance of art, drama, dance and music.

The Creative Arts Conference 2022 is a two-day virtual conference on 9th and 10th September 2022. Building on the success of last year’s conference, this event will provide space for teachers to reflect, restore, recharge, and create how they teach music, art, design; dance; and drama to make the arts come alive for all children in schools. The conference is open for foundation phase, primary & high school teachers, students studying to enter the teaching profession and for school principals and management teams

The driving force behind this conference and change is Hendrik Marais, head of creative arts at Rustenburg. He shares, “Too often arts education is marginalised in schools. An education without the arts is inadequate, given the dramatic ways it changes students’ lives academically and personally. It is key to preparing them for success in a complex 21st-century world.” The most effective way for us to encourage creative arts in our schools is by creating a moment to bring these key teachers together.

The two days include keynote speakers, workshops, masterclasses, exhibitions and so much more to invigorate creative arts teaching. Going virtual also enables the host of the event to bring in international speakers like Tiina Nikander-Koivukangas from Finland, Elizabeth Stafford the Editor of the Primary Music Education Magazine and Vaughan Fleischfresser, a Music & Arts Education Advocate from Scotland.  WCED Head of Education, Dr Brent Walters

The CAC2022 will be the meeting place for all teachers responsible for teaching Creative Arts from Gr R – 12 in South African schools and then also for school leadership teams. It will bring a fresh perspective of why arts education must be vital as part of every child’s holistic development and it aims to connect the dots to assist teachers to use an integrated approach, teaching the arts and infuse the teaching of the subject with digital innovation.

All attendees will earn 20 CPDT points, the organisers want all teachers, irrespective of their knowledge and skill level in teaching the Creative Arts, to walk away with tools that enhance their everyday practice in their classrooms.

Belinda Petersen, Principal of Rustenburg shares, “Through this conference, our responsibility is to provide a platform for teachers to learn, discover, explore ideas, and realise their own capabilities in making the arts come alive for all children,” said Petersen.

Creative Arts teachers can find out more about the event at https://schoolscape.co.za/creative-arts/ . The organisers are also asking those passionate about creative arts to help the event reach more teachers in need of inspiration by sponsoring tickets.
