LEARNING

‘Every child deserves a champion: an adult who will never give up on them, who understands the power of connection and insists that they become the best that they can possibly be.’ Rita Pierson – teacher.

Creative Arts

Learners expressing themselves through creative mediums is as important as academic participation  in our curriculum. Paintings, drawings, papier-mâché, mobiles, paper and ceramic sculptures and other artwork adorn the classrooms and passages of our school. These are the products of art lessons, enjoyed by all Rustybugs. An art exhibition and auction is held to present and motivate all the girls’ artistic accomplishments for the wider school community to enjoy. Learners are given the opportunity to experience a wide variety of creative exercises, using colour, design and an expansive selection of media and materials.

Learning support

The learning support department partners with parents, caregivers, teachers, and therapists to ensure that our girls are given the support that they need; enabling them to be happy, contributing members of our school community.

Sports

Sports enables learners to understand that success and failure isn’t measured by wins and losses, but by achieving personal excellence, we give the girls the best opportunity to succeed in sport and life. Rustenburg prioritised sport activities based on the importance & benefits it will serve each learner in the future and  in their individual capacity to grow

ICT

The ICT team collaborates with the academic team to provide devices and applications that support technology integration, coding and the development of 21st century skills.

Foundation Phase Gr R - 3

Our core subjects in the Foundation Phase are: English, Afrikaans, Mathematics, and Life Skills. Reading and Mathematics skills are taught in small groups where our girls are challenged and supported and required to develop essential thinking and reasoning skills. Our Life Skills programme, which is taught by specialist teachers, consists of class gym, art, singing, drama, recorder lessons (Grade 2 & 3), computer literacy, Coding and Robotics and enrichment lessons. IsiXhosa is taught as an additional language through song, dance, and stories, and our new approach will see it being taught as a First Additional Language.

Intermediate/Senior Phase Gr 4 - 7

Seven subjects comprise the curriculum in the Intermediate Phase (Grades 4, 5, and 6) and ten subjects are covered in the Senior Phase (Grade 7).  IsiXhosa is also offered as a first additional language in all grades.  Art, computer literacy, Coding & Robotics, book education, singing, drama, enrichment, and physical education are taught by specialist teachers in these subjects.  Learners also have the opportunity to enjoy hands-on experiments in our well-equipped Science Laboratory.

Enrichment Programme

Enrich (Verb) – To Improve The Quality Of Something By Adding Something Else

At Rustenburg our enrichment programme is for everyone, enrichment lessons enable the rustybuggie to learn and develop skills that are not found in the curriculum but that offer them the opportunity to explore activities outside of the academic programme.

Grade 3 to 6 learners enjoy an enrichment programme that runs over the first three terms of the year. Classes rotate termly enabling the girls to explore something different with every rotation. The girls are taught a variety of life skills from simple weaving, to African fabric design, beading, and science experiments to name but a few.

With a full academic programme keeping our learners busy all day, some ‘down time’ during enrichment lessons creates the balance that is essential in maintaining a healthy body and mind. The enrichment facilitators derive just as much pleasure from the programme as the girls do as it enables them to get to know each child better in an informal, relaxed environment.

FAQ’S

Girls must write their full name (first name + surname) on the trial sheet under the correct sporting code and age group which is located on the sports notice board.

Girls are notified via the intercom when trial sheets have been placed on the sports notice board.
It is located on the brick wall in the back of the foyer of the main hall and a few steps away from the tuckshop.
Trial 1: All girls who sign up for a particular team sport will be required to attend trials. After trial 1, girls may or may not be asked to attend call back trials. Girls are notified via the intercom when the “call back trial lists” have been placed on the sports notice board. It is their responsibility to listen to the intercom and check the board.

Trial 2: Call Back Trials – the girls who have been invited must attend Note – it is up to the discretion of the coaches whether additional trials need to be held in any particular sport/age group.

IMPORTANT A girl may try out for more than 1 summer or 1 winter sport but MUST make sure she is able to fulfil her commitment to the team for the duration of the season (attend weekly practice days, match days & festivals).

IF trial dates clash for example: tennis & water polo – please notify Mrs J Liss, so a special arrangement can be made and that the relevant selectors are notified. A girl MAY NOT sign up for a team sport, be selected for the team and then withdraw. This is denying another girl the opportunity to make a team sport which results in disappointment.
A girl may sign up for “General” under that specific sporting code example: general tennis or general hockey.
After team sports trials have taken place and teams have been selected, the GENERAL SPORTS SHEETS & CULTURAL ACTIVITY SHEETS will be placed on the sports notice board. Girls must write their full names (first name & surname). Girls are notified via the intercom when these sign-up sheets have been placed on the sports notice board.
Please e-mail Miss C Davison (candav@myrgjs.org.za) with your daughter’s details: Previous school team sport or non-team sport involvement, the age group and the sport/activity your daughter would like to try out for at Rustenburg. A girl must play sport in the correct age group irrespective of which grade she is in.
