South Africa – April, 2024 – Rustenburg Girls Junior School proudly announces the launch of the first-ever National Ensemble Competition, which will take place from 8 to 10 August 2024.

As our school celebrates a remarkable 130-year history, we take pride in acknowledging the profound impact of performing arts deeply rooted in the traditions of our institution. “The National Ensemble Competition is an opportunity for young musicians (Grade 4 – 12) from across the country to come together, exchange ideas, share their passion, and push the boundaries of artistic excellence,” Hendrik Marais, Head of Creative Arts at Rustenburg Girls’ Junior School.

The National Ensemble Competition aims to:

  • Develop young musicians through collaborative participation and encourage the enjoyment of performing with others.
  • Encompass a wide range of genres of music, including classical and jazz.
  • Foster an understanding, love, and appreciation for ensemble music as well as the performance thereof amongst young musicians.

The competition will feature a diverse range of ensemble categories, including orchestras, chamber groups, choirs, and more. Participating groups will have the chance to perform before esteemed judges, receive constructive feedback, and compete for prestigious prizes. The closing date for entries will be on 30 April 2024, the video recordings submission for round one deadline is on 25 May 2024, and the announcement of finalists invited to round two will be on 6 June 2024.

Trinity College London, a leading international exam board for performing arts, music, and English language qualifications, proudly sponsors the competition. Their support underscores the event’s commitment to promoting musical education and excellence. Trinity College London’s reputation for setting the highest standards in music assessment aligns perfectly with the goals of the National Ensemble Competition.

“I know firsthand the joy of ensemble music making, and it was a very easy decision to motivate Trinity to become the lead sponsor of the National Ensemble Competition. Although the inaugural event will no doubt feature many schools, we know its success will lead to a larger intake of entrants from further afield in years to come. From the Trinity perspective, it is an honour to be involved and to have the Trinity brand associated with such a positive music education event.” Peter Borchers – Trinity College London National Manager for South Africa, Botswana and Namibia
