Hosted by Rustenburg Girls’ Junior School, Sponsored by Trinity College London

Rustenburg Girls’ Junior School is proud to announce the inaugural National Ensemble Competition, taking place from 8th to 10th of August 2024, in Rondebosch, Cape Town. Sponsored by Trinity College London, this prestigious event is set to become a cornerstone in South Africa’s musical landscape.

We are excited to welcome 43 ensembles, bands and orchestras from across the country, featuring over 600 learners from Grades 4 to 12. The competition has quickly garnered national attention, underscoring the rich musical talent present in our schools.

“We extend our heartfelt gratitude to Peter Borchers and Trinity College London for their generous sponsorship. Their support has been instrumental in bringing this vision to life, enabling us to offer a platform that celebrates and nurtures young musicians.” Hendrik Marais, Head of Creative Arts at Rustenburg Girls’ Junior School.

Music has been an integral part of Rustenburg Girls’ Junior School for the past 130 years. As we commemorate this milestone, we are proud to provide performance opportunities to over 600 dedicated musicians. This competition not only highlights the importance of ensemble playing in developing musicians’ skills but also promotes it as a means to provide quality music education to learners nationwide.

“Events such as the National Ensemble Competition provide young musicians fantastic opportunities to showcase their talents, collaborate with peers, and receive recognition for their hard work. Our sponsorship is a testament to Trinity’s dedication to enhancing educational experiences, promoting cultural exchange, and strengthening the bonds between aspiring artists. It’s about creating a platform where the passion for music can flourish, encouraging creativity, teamwork and excellence among the next generation of musicians.”  Peter Borchers, Trinity College London – National Coordinator Southern Africa

The competition will be judged by a distinguished panel of adjudicators: Prof Catherine Foxcroft (Rhodes University), Pamela Kierman (Senior Lecturer and Head of Brass, University of Stellenbosch), and Olivia Herrendoerfer (Senior Educational Specialist, WCED).

The Junior Final Round (Grades 4 – 7) will take place on Saturday, August 10th, 2024, at 15:00, followed by the Senior Final Round (Gr 8 – 12) at 19:00. Tickets for the finals will be available at the door for R50 each. The competition will be held at Rustenburg Girls’ Junior School (Orton Hall, Main Road, Rondebosch).

In the words of Oliver Sacks, “The power of music to integrate and cure is quite fundamental. It is the profoundest nonchemical medication.”
